I have decided to write my Saturday posts about Saints. This will help me grow in my knowledge of the Saints – there are so many! My “Saintly Saturday” posts will give a brief description of a Saint that has a feast day on that Saturday. If there is no Saint on that date, I will pick another.
This Saintly Saturday is the feast day of Saint Bernardine of Siena. He was alive 1380-1444 and is the Patron Saint of advertising, gambling, Italy and public relations. (There really is a Saint for everything!) Saint Bernardine is best known for his devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus and popularized the use of the IHS symbol. He preached all over Italy, only after many years of solitude (because of a weak and hoarse voice, that was later cured) in his Franciscan order. His teachings focused on the mercy of Jesus and the love Mary.
Saint Bernardine of Siena, words were very important to you. You spent most of your life speaking the golden words of Jesus’ mercy and his Holy Name. And you abhorred words that were shameful. Pray for us that we may always choose to speak Jesus’ name with reverence and choose words of love over words of shame. Amen
