Pray For Peace

My Prayer today is the Divine Mercy Chaplet

For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

And a reminder that we all long for Peace – each action is a prayer for “less harm.”

Pray for Peace
by Ellen Bass

Pray to whomever you kneel down to:
Jesus nailed to his wooden or plastic cross,
his suffering face bent to kiss you,
Buddha still under the bo tree in scorching heat,
Adonai, Allah. Raise your arms to Mary
that she may lay her palm on our brows,
to Shekhina, Queen of Heaven and Earth,
to Inanna in her stripped descent.

Then pray to the bus driver who takes you to work.
On the bus, pray for everyone riding that bus,
for everyone riding buses all over the world.
Drop some silver and pray.

Waiting in line for the movies, for the ATM,
for your latte and croissant, offer your plea.
Make your eating and drinking a supplication.
Make your slicing of carrots a holy act,
each translucent layer of the onion, a deeper prayer.

To Hawk or Wolf, or the Great Whale, pray.
Bow down to terriers and shepherds and Siamese cats.
Fields of artichokes and elegant strawberries.

Make the brushing of your hair
a prayer, every strand its own voice,
singing in the choir on your head.
As you wash your face, the water slipping
through your fingers, a prayer: Water,
softest thing on earth, gentleness
that wears away rock.

Making love, of course, is already prayer.
Skin, and open mouths worshipping that skin,
the fragile cases we are poured into.

If you’re hungry, pray. If you’re tired.
Pray to Gandhi and Dorothy Day.
Shakespeare. Sappho. Sojourner Truth.

When you walk to your car, to the mailbox,
to the video store, let each step
be a prayer that we all keep our legs,
that we do not blow off anyone else’s legs.
Or crush their skulls.
And if you are riding on a bicycle
or a skateboard, in a wheelchair, each revolution
of the wheels a prayer as the earth revolves:
less harm, less harm, less harm.

And as you work, typing with a new manicure,
a tiny palm tree painted on one pearlescent nail
or delivering soda or drawing good blood
into rubber-capped vials, writing on a blackboard
with yellow chalk, twirling pizzas–

With each breath in, take in the faith of those
who have believed when belief seemed foolish,
who persevered. With each breath out, cherish.

Pull weeds for peace, turn over in your sleep for peace,
feed the birds, each shiny seed
that spills onto the earth, another second of peace.
Wash your dishes, call your mother, drink wine.

Shovel leaves or snow or trash from your sidewalk.
Make a path. Fold a photo of a dead child
around your VISA card. Scoop your holy water
from the gutter. Gnaw your crust.
Mumble along like a crazy person, stumbling
your prayer through the streets.

A Tranquil Mind

“A tranquil mind gives life to the body.” ~Proverbs 14:30

Another version is: “A heart at peace gives life to the body.” Either way, when our hearts and minds are tranquil and at peace, we are able to physically live the life God intended.  It is hard sometimes (or maybe a lot of the time) to be at peace with ourselves or ourselves in this world.  While it may be hard it is important to remember that the Lord can provide true peace.  “Trust in the Lord with all your heart” (Proverbs 3:5) and with that trust the heart and mind will find peace, tranquility and, ultimately, a fulfilled life.

Whom Shall I Fear?

Unfortunately, a young man I briefly met a few years ago, and a cousin to my dear friend, passed away from cancer last night.  I did not know Luke, but I did know that his Faith in Jesus was clear and evident.  I feel that it is appropriate to introduce you to “Whom Shall I Fear” by Chris Tomlin on this Tempo Tuesday.  “Though darkness fills the night, it cannot hide the light.”  We have nothing to fear because the Lord is on our side – He will keep His promises.  May Luke rest peacefully in the arms of Jesus.

Whom Shall I Fear

You hear me when I call
You are my morning song
Though darkness fills the night
It cannot hide the light
Whom shall I fear?

You crush the enemy
Underneath my feet
You are my sword and shield
Though trouble linger still
Whom shall I fear?

I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies is always by my side
The One who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies is always by my side

My strength is in Your name
For You alone can save
You will deliver me
Yours is the victory
Whom shall I fear?
Whom shall I fear?

And nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the whole world in Your hands
I’m holding on to Your promises
You are faithful
You are faithful

How Lucky Am I?

I was tired today and my kids seemed to be, too.  We went for a walk and played outside, but we were dragging.  There was whining on all fronts.  Some days are like that.  I put the kids to bed early for my own sanity and to, hopefully, cure the bad case of the whines.  When I went to check on Avery, I had to take a picture.  Kids are cute when they’re awake, but when they’re asleep? They’re peaceful and beautiful and a rush of emotions washes over me.  How lucky am I?  Thank God for my spectacular children.

Sometime

This Tempo Tuesday I’d like to introduce you to the poem “Sometime” by May Riley Smith.  We may not understand why things happen in our lives.  We may ask, “Why, God?” Or, we may finally say, “I get it now.” Then again, we may only come to know the reason why sometime when the sun forevermore has set.  We must have faith that God’s plan is what is best.

Peace to all of you – may we all find peace in knowing that the Father loves us.

Sometime
May Riley Smith

SOMETIME, when all life’s lessons have been learned,

And sun and stars forevermore have set,

The things which our weak judgments here have spurned,

The things o’er which we grieved with lashes wet,

Will flash before us, out of life’s dark night,

  As stars shine most in deeper tints of blue;

And we shall see how all God’s plans are right,

And how what seems reproof was love most true.

And we shall see how, while we frown and sigh,

  God’s plans go on as best for you and me;

How, when we called, he heeded not our cry,

Because his wisdom to the end could see.

And e’en as prudent parents disallow

Too much of sweet to craving babyhood,

So God, perhaps, is keeping from us now

Life’s sweetest things, because it seemeth good.

And if sometimes, commingled with life’s wine,

We find the wormwood, and rebel and shrink,

Be sure a wiser hand than yours or mine

Pours out this potion for our lips to drink.

And if some friend we love is lying low,

Where human kisses cannot reach his face,

Oh, do not blame the loving Father so,

But wear your sorrow with obedient grace!

And you shall shortly know that lengthened breath

Is not the sweetest gift God sends his friend,

And that, sometimes, the sable pall of death

Conceals the fairest bloom his love can send.

If we could push ajar the gates of life,

And stand within, and all God’s workings see,

We could interpret all this doubt and strife,

And for each mystery could find a key.

But not today. Then be content, poor heart!

God’s plans like lilies pure and white unfold.

We must not tear the close-shut leaves apart,

Time will reveal the chalices of gold.

And if, through patient toil, we reach the land

Where tired feet, with sandals loosed, may rest,

When we shall clearly know and understand,

I think that we will say, “God knew the best!”

Peace in Jesus

A friend asked me to pray for her today.  Her request reminded me of this beautiful verse:

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.
Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” ~Philipians 4:6-7

Our anxieties may be about health (our own or others), children, marriage, or relationships.  We are human.  We worry about things; however, we do not have to worry.  The Lord will be with us.  He will give us Peace.  There is Hope in every worry:  The nurse that helps you recover;  Your child’s smile after a monkey bar pass; When your spouse lets you have the last cupcake; The call from your long-lost sibling.  You’ll find Peace in Jesus.  Look to Him.

In Christ Alone

Keith and Kristyn Getty’s “In Christ Alone” is the song for this Tempo Tuesday.  Jesus Christ alone provides strength, love and hope.  He is the light and He has the power.  He can bring peace.  May we turn to Him as an example to love one another and help bring peace to the world.

In Christ alone my hope is found;
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This cornerstone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all—
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

The Holy Spirit is There

“[The Holy Spirit] is the giver; through him we can be shaped to the likeness of the Son.  He gives us new life and makes us capable of living.  He heartens us, strengthens our will, heightens our understanding so that we may believe and hope and love – that we may draw nearer to God and live in unity with him.” ~Father Alfred Delp, S.J.

The Holy Spirit doesn’t always get as much attention as the other two members of the Holy Trinity; however, he provides heart and strength and understanding (among other gifts) to believe, hope and love. When we are able to accept these gifts, the fruits come forth.

There are many days as a stay at home mom that I forget that the Holy Spirit is there to guide me.  I do often pray for the gift of understanding.  May I not only understand God’s way, but the reason behind actions of others. In turn, I hope for patience and peace.

*Avery decided to take the clothes out of the dryer and climb in today.

There Is A Peace

This Tempo Tuesday I have my laptop and it’s working great. Being without my laptop taught me to appreciate it more.

NeedToBreathe‘s “Testify” is my pick this week.  Every time I hear it I want to sing along.  Not only does it have a catchy beat, but the lyrics are a reminder that if we surrender to the Lord we will be at peace, there is love and He will satisfy the most longing of hearts.  What a blessing to know that God will always be there for us. There is copious amounts of Hope in His promises and faithfulness.

Give me your heart, Give me your song
Sing it with all your might
Come to the fountain and you can be satisfied
There is a peace, there is a love
You can get lost inside
Come to the fountain and let me hear you testify

It’s A Blessed Day Today

This Tempo Mardi Gras Tuesday I introduce you to “Hello Hey” by Connor Flanagan.  I met Connor at the 2015 Maine Catholic Youth Convention. I love this catchy song because it’s about how the beautiful things in life are reminders of God and that no matter what He is always with us.  We have the desire to be loved in the way God loves us and if we can try to love others the way he loves us then the world will be even more beautiful than it is already.  As we begin Lent tomorrow, we must remember to LOVE.

It’s the simple things in life that keep reminding me of You
You got me singing like
Hello Hey Hallelujah
won’t you move me
come and shine through me
Hello Hey Hallelujah

So I said wake up, shape up, get your shine on, get your smile on
it’s a blessed day today, gifted in every way
a movement of grace the way the sun hits the sky at the break of the day
I live to be loved and I long to love more
from the moment that I rise to when my feet hit the floor
to whom much is given I know much is expected
but it feels like everyday I’m taken to school in this lesson
what a blessing to know the Father holds my heart
no matter how hard I fall, I’ll never leave His arms
no matter how close I feel, He holds me closer still
True love that’s real
